Shooting Safety Rules

1) Handle all firearms as if they were loaded!

Never forget that a firearm has the potential to cause serious injury or death in a single instant of carelessness. Make safe gun handling a habit at all times. Even after you determine that a firearm is unloaded, continue to handle it with the same care and attention as if it were loaded.

2) Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction!

A safe direction means that if the firearm were to discharge, it would not cause injury or damage. Always consider that a bullet can ricochet, glance off objects, or penetrate walls, ceilings, floors, windows, and other surfaces.

3) Keep your finger out of the trigger guard and off the trigger until you are ready to fire!

Keep your finger completely outside the trigger guard until your sights are aligned on a safe target and you have made the decision to fire. This habit helps prevent unintended shots and promotes safer handling.

4) Always be certain of your target and the surrounding area before firing!

Be sure of what your bullet could strike before you pull the trigger. Never fire at movement, a noise, a flash of color, or a rustling bush without positively identifying your target and knowing what is beyond it.

5) Store firearms securely when not in use.

Firearms should be stored safely and responsibly, away from unauthorized users, children, and anyone who should not have access. Use secure storage options and follow all laws that apply in your area.

6) Use the correct ammunition for your firearm.

Always confirm that the ammunition matches the firearm manufacturer’s specifications. Using the wrong ammunition can damage the firearm and create serious safety risks.

7) Wear proper eye and ear protection.

Shooting can expose you to loud noise, debris, gases, and other hazards. Always use appropriate hearing protection and safety glasses when shooting or when near active shooting areas.

8) Do not handle firearms while impaired.

Never handle, clean, carry, or use firearms while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substance that affects judgment, attention, or coordination.

9) Understand your firearm before using it.

Read the owner’s manual, learn the firearm’s controls, understand its safety features, and seek qualified instruction before handling or using any unfamiliar firearm.

10) Follow all range rules, local laws, and safety instructions.

Always follow posted range rules, instructor commands, transport laws, storage laws, and all applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
