DETAILS

HK G36 .22 LR 18.1-Inch Semi-Auto Rifle

The HK G36 .22 LR 18.1-Inch is a semi-automatic rimfire rifle styled closely after Heckler & Koch’s full-size G36 platform.

Manufactured in Germany by Umarex for HK, the rimfire version retains many of the exterior characteristics associated with the original G36 while using a dedicated .22 LR blowback operating system.

In addition, the rifle combines an 18.125-inch barrel, folding polymer stock, polymer receiver, G36-style carry-handle sight rail and detachable rimfire magazines.

Together, these characteristics distinguish the modern G36 .22 LR from the centerfire G36 family while preserving much of the recognizable exterior profile.

HK G36 .22 LR 18.1-Inch Overview

The HK G36 .22 LR 18.1-Inch represents HK’s current full-size rimfire interpretation of the G36.

HK USA reintroduced the configuration in the U.S. market through its partnership with Umarex.

At the center of the design is a dedicated blowback-operated .22 LR action housed inside a polymer receiver.

Furthermore, the rifle uses a side-folding buttstock, long G36-style handguard, elevated sight rail and familiar exterior control layout.

As a result, the rimfire model looks substantially closer to the original G36 than a conventional sporting .22 LR rifle.

G36 .22 LR Chambering

The rifle is chambered in .22 Long Rifle.

HK’s current operator manual specifically references .22 LR HV, indicating high-velocity .22 LR ammunition within the official technical data.

The rimfire chambering distinguishes this model mechanically from the original centerfire G36 platform.

Additionally, it allows HK and Umarex to use a simple blowback action rather than reproducing the original centerfire rifle’s gas-operated system.

For additional informational firearm pages, browse the Gunvexa firearm reference catalog.

For exact identification, caliber and model markings should also be confirmed on the individual rifle.

18.125-Inch Barrel

The factory barrel measures 18.125 inches, or approximately 18.1 inches.

HK also lists the measurement as 460 mm in the current operator manual.

Therefore, your product title:

HK G36 .22 LR 18.1-Inch Semi-Auto Rifle

accurately reflects the manufacturer’s published barrel length when rounded to one decimal place.

The barrel is considerably longer than the short-barreled G36 .22 LR pistol configuration.

Rifle and Pistol Barrel Differences

HK currently documents both rifle and pistol versions of the G36 .22 LR platform.

The rifle uses:

18.125-inch / 460 mm barrel

while the pistol configuration uses:

10.25-inch / 260 mm barrel

Consequently, barrel length provides one of the clearest ways to distinguish the two factory versions.

The rifle also uses a folding buttstock, whereas the pistol uses a rear end cap.

Blowback Operating System

Unlike the centerfire G36, the rimfire version uses a simple blowback action.

This system is specifically documented in the HK operator manual.

The action is designed around the lower-pressure .22 LR cartridge rather than the gas-operated architecture of the original military rifle.

Therefore, the G36 .22 LR should be described as a G36-style rimfire platform rather than as a mechanically identical copy of the centerfire G36.

Semi-Automatic Action

The rifle operates in semi-automatic mode.

Each trigger press fires one cartridge, after which the blowback action cycles the bolt and loads the next round from the magazine.

This operating format differentiates the G36 .22 LR from manually operated rimfire rifles.

Furthermore, the semi-automatic blowback system forms the basic mechanical foundation of the current HK/Umarex G36 rimfire platform.

Polymer Receiver

HK specifies polymer receivers for the G36 .22 LR rifle.

The extensive use of polymer also reflects the exterior design language of the original centerfire G36 family.

However, the rimfire receiver architecture differs internally from the original military platform.

The .22 LR version uses a dedicated receiver arrangement designed around its blowback mechanism.

Therefore, exterior similarity should not be confused with identical internal construction.

Two-Piece Rimfire Receiver Architecture

Published technical evaluations describe the rimfire receiver as a two-piece clamshell-style polymer assembly.

This differs from the one-piece reinforced polymer receiver used on the original centerfire G36.

Furthermore, the dedicated .22 LR receiver houses a blowback bolt rather than a rotating-bolt gas system.

Consequently, the rifle achieves visual similarity while maintaining a distinct rimfire mechanical design.

Folding Polymer Buttstock

The rifle uses a side-folding polymer buttstock.

HK specifically lists the foldable buttstock as one of the defining features of the rifle configuration.

When folded, the overall length is reduced substantially.

When extended, the rifle returns to its full G36-style profile.

This folding stock is one of the most recognizable exterior features of the platform.

Folded and Extended Overall Length

HK’s current product page lists an overall-length range of approximately:

28.2 inches to 38 inches

depending on stock position.

The operator manual lists approximately 37.8 inches in the extended rifle configuration.

Small differences between rounded published figures are normal.

Therefore, the safest technical presentation is:

Overall length: approximately 28.2–38 inches depending on stock position.

G36-Style Polymer Handguard

The rifle uses a full-length polymer G36-style handguard.

Its profile follows the recognizable ventilated appearance associated with the G36 family.

Furthermore, the handguard forms part of the exterior component compatibility emphasized by HK.

The current rifle differs slightly from some earlier Walther-branded rimfire G36 versions, so production generation should be considered when comparing photographs.

G36 Exterior Component Compatibility

HK states that several components are compatible with original G36 parts.

These include the:

  • Handguard
  • Sight rail
  • Stock

This compatibility contributes to the rifle’s close exterior resemblance to the original platform.

However, internal receiver and operating components remain specific to the rimfire firearm.

Therefore, compatibility should be understood as applying to selected exterior parts rather than the entire weapon system.

Elevated Carry-Handle Rail

One of the most recognizable G36 characteristics is its elevated upper sight structure.

The rimfire rifle reproduces this layout with an elevated rail mounted above the receiver.

This structure combines the G36-style carry-handle silhouette with an optics-mounting interface.

Consequently, the upper rail is a major visual identifier for the rifle.

Picatinny Optics Interface

The top structure incorporates a Picatinny-style optics rail.

This provides an interface for compatible optical sights.

In addition, the rail sits substantially higher than the barrel axis because of the traditional G36-style carry-handle arrangement.

For identification purposes, the elevated rail helps distinguish the rifle from more conventional flat-top rimfire platforms.

Adjustable Rear Sight

HK lists the rifle with an adjustable rear sight.

The operator manual specifically identifies adjustment for:

  • Windage
  • Elevation

The sight forms part of the elevated upper assembly.

Furthermore, it works together with the front sight to provide the factory mechanical sighting arrangement.

Hooded Front Sight

The front sight follows the familiar hooded post-style appearance associated with the G36 design.

Published documentation identifies the front sight width at approximately 0.07 inch / 1.9 mm.

The sight sits high relative to the bore because of the G36’s elevated sight system.

Consequently, both front and rear sights contribute strongly to the rifle’s distinctive silhouette.

10.3-Inch Sight Radius

HK’s operator manual lists a 10.3-inch sight radius for the rimfire rifle.

This measurement corresponds with the compact sight spacing on the elevated G36 sight structure.

Although relatively short compared with some traditional rifle sight systems, it reflects the geometry of the G36-inspired upper assembly.

Therefore, sight radius can be included as part of the technical specification.

Ambidextrous Control Layout

The G36 .22 LR incorporates several ambidextrous controls inspired by the centerfire platform.

The selector levers are accessible from both sides.

Additionally, the charging-handle layout is designed to accommodate operation from either side.

Together, these details reinforce the G36-style control arrangement of the rimfire model.

Short-Throw Safety Selector

The rifle uses a short-throw safety selector.

The selector arrangement visually mirrors the familiar G36 control layout.

Furthermore, the safety markings and lever positioning contribute to the rifle’s exterior authenticity.

For exact safety operation and handling information, users should follow the manufacturer’s operator manual.

Ambidextrous Charging Handle

The charging handle is positioned high along the upper receiver area.

Its layout allows it to be manipulated from either side.

Published reviews note that the rimfire charging handle reciprocates with the action.

Consequently, it differs mechanically in some respects from the centerfire G36 while retaining a similar overall control position.

Bolt Hold-Open System

The rifle incorporates a bolt hold-open system.

Published technical documentation notes that the action locks open after the final round.

A bolt-hold-open control is also positioned within the trigger-guard area.

This provides another G36-style operating detail while remaining part of the dedicated rimfire action.

Single-Stage Trigger

HK identifies the factory trigger as a single-stage trigger.

The current operator manual publishes a trigger-pull range of approximately:

7–10 pounds

or:

3,175–4,536 grams

Individual examples can measure differently within or around the published tolerance.

Therefore, the manufacturer range is the most appropriate specification for the catalog page.

7–10 Pound Published Trigger Range

The official manual lists 7–10 lb as the trigger-pull specification.

This is more useful for product documentation than quoting one test rifle’s measured trigger pull.

Therefore, use the manufacturer range in the specification table.

A previously modified example may differ from this factory value.

Threaded Muzzle

Published current documentation identifies the G36 .22 LR rifle with a threaded muzzle.

The muzzle is commonly documented with a 1/2×28 thread pattern.

A G36-style four-prong muzzle device is fitted to the current U.S. rifle.

Because muzzle components can be changed on previously owned examples, however, exact installed condition should be checked.

Four-Prong G36-Style Muzzle Device

The current U.S. configuration includes a four-prong G36-style muzzle device.

Its exterior design reflects the visual appearance of G36 family components.

Furthermore, it contributes strongly to the rifle’s full-size replica styling.

The muzzle device should therefore be included when documenting an original factory example.

Detachable Rimfire Magazine

The rifle uses a detachable box magazine.

HK currently documents three compatible capacities:

  • 10 rounds
  • 20 rounds
  • 30 rounds

The rifle package itself is offered in either 10-round or 20-round factory configurations.
