DETAILS
Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18×44 Illuminated Tremor 3
The Leupold Mark 5HD Illuminated Tremor 3 combines a 3.6-18x magnification range with a detailed first focal plane grid reticle and an illuminated aiming point.
Leupold pairs the Tremor 3 with its M5C3 ZeroLock elevation system. Therefore, the reticle and turret both use MIL measurements, which keeps the overall system consistent.
The scope also uses a 35mm maintube, 44mm objective lens and side-focus control. In addition, the illuminated reticle offers seven brightness settings for changing light conditions.
At approximately 26 ounces, the scope stays fairly light for a 35mm first focal plane optic with this level of adjustment.
Leupold Mark 5HD Illuminated Tremor 3 Magnification
The Leupold Mark 5HD Illuminated Tremor 3 provides magnification from 3.6x to 18x.
At 3.6x, the scope provides a wider view around the target. Meanwhile, increasing the magnification lets you see smaller details more clearly at longer distances.
This gives the scope a useful 5:1 zoom range.
The field of view measures approximately 28.3 feet at 100 yards on 3.6x and about 5.8 feet at 100 yards on 18x.
Illuminated Tremor 3 FFP Reticle
The Tremor 3 reticle sits in the first focal plane.
Therefore, the reticle changes apparent size together with the target image as you adjust magnification.
Its MIL references remain proportional throughout the 3.6-18x range. As a result, the relationship between the reticle markings and the target does not depend on one fixed magnification setting.
The illuminated version also adds a visible aiming reference for lower-light conditions.
Tremor 3 Grid Reticle
The Tremor 3 uses a detailed MIL-based grid layout rather than a basic crosshair.
Its central area contains small aiming references at grid intersections. In addition, numbered horizontal lines make different parts of the reticle easier to identify.
The reticle also includes fine MIL references and an open upper section.
This gives the shooter plenty of visual information while leaving part of the sight picture less crowded.
Tremor 3 MIL Markings
The reticle uses MIL measurements throughout its layout.
Fine chevron references measure 0.1 MIL, while the wider grid gives the shooter additional visual reference points.
Because the scope turrets also adjust in MIL, the reticle and dial system stay within the same measurement system.
Therefore, there is no need to mix MIL markings with MOA turret values.
Seven Illumination Settings
This Mark 5HD provides seven illumination settings.
The different brightness levels allow the user to adjust the reticle illumination for changing light conditions.
For example, a lower setting may work better when the surrounding light is limited. Meanwhile, a brighter setting can make the illuminated portion easier to see when more ambient light is present.
Choose the lowest setting that gives a clear aiming reference without overpowering the rest of the sight picture.
CR2032 Battery
A CR2032 battery powers the illumination system.
This common coin-style battery keeps the electronic system straightforward.
Because the scope uses illumination, checking the battery before an extended outing makes sense.
However, the etched reticle remains present even when illumination is switched off.
Motion Sensor Technology
The illuminated Mark 5HD also uses Motion Sensor Technology, commonly shortened to MST.
The system helps manage battery use automatically when the optic remains inactive.
As a result, the scope does not need to keep the illumination running continuously when it is sitting unused.
This feature adds convenience without changing the basic operation of the reticle.
M5C3 ZeroLock Elevation Turret
Leupold equips this model with its M5C3 elevation adjustment.
The turret moves in 0.1 MIL clicks and provides approximately 29 MIL of total elevation adjustment.
In addition, the elevation system works across three revolutions.
A visual and tactile revolution indicator helps the user keep track of the turret position.
ZeroLock System
The ZeroLock system helps prevent unwanted elevation dial movement.
When the turret sits at the established setting, the locking feature helps keep it there during normal handling.
Therefore, the dial is less likely to move accidentally when equipment gets carried or stored.
The control remains easy to understand without adding unnecessary complexity.
ZeroStop
The M5C3 system also provides a ZeroStop.
After setting the zero correctly, the system gives the elevation dial a firm stopping point when returning to the original setting.
As a result, the shooter can identify the established zero without continuing to rotate past it.
ZeroLock and ZeroStop work together to make the elevation dial easier to manage.
29 MIL Elevation Range
The elevation adjustment provides approximately 29 MIL of total travel.
Each click equals 0.1 MIL. Therefore, ten clicks equal one full MIL.
The three-revolution system provides enough dial travel without requiring an unusually tall turret.
In addition, the revolution indicator helps distinguish one turn from another.
Windage Adjustment
Windage also adjusts in 0.1 MIL clicks.
The scope provides approximately 23 MIL of total windage adjustment.
Unlike the exposed elevation dial, the windage control uses a cap.
Therefore, the cap helps protect the setting against accidental movement.
Leupold Mark 5HD 35mm Maintube
The Leupold Mark 5HD Illuminated Tremor 3 uses a 35mm maintube.
For that reason, you need rings or a one-piece mount made specifically for a 35mm tube.
Standard 30mm and 1-inch rings will not fit correctly.
The 35mm body also gives the internal adjustment system room for its broad elevation and windage ranges.
44mm Objective Lens
The scope uses a 44mm objective lens.
This size keeps the front section reasonably compact while working well with the 3.6-18x magnification range.
In addition, a 44mm objective avoids some of the extra size found on larger 50mm and 56mm optics.
The result is a useful balance between optical size and overall scope dimensions.
Precision Side Focus
A side-focus dial handles parallax adjustment.
The adjustment begins at approximately 50 yards.
Therefore, the user can match the parallax setting more closely to different target distances.
The control sits on the side of the scope, which keeps it within easy reach.
Eye Relief
Eye relief measures approximately 3.5 to 3.8 inches through the magnification range.
This gives the user some flexibility when positioning the scope on the rifle.
However, proper placement still depends on the stock, mounting system and the shooter’s natural head position.
Check the sight picture at both low and high magnification before finalizing the mounting position.
Field of View
At 3.6x, the field of view measures approximately 28.3 feet at 100 yards.
At 18x, it narrows to about 5.8 feet at 100 yards.
This is normal because higher magnification shows a smaller section of the overall scene.
Therefore, lower magnification provides a wider view, while higher magnification brings smaller details closer.
Leupold Optical System
Leupold builds the Mark 5HD optical system to provide a clear image across changing outdoor light conditions.
The system also works to control glare when strong light enters the scope from difficult angles.
In simple terms, the goal is to keep the image clear and usable rather than relying on unnecessary marketing language.
The illuminated reticle adds another useful option when the surrounding light becomes limited.
Waterproof and Fogproof Construction
Leupold seals the Mark 5HD against water and internal fogging.
Therefore, changing weather and temperature should not normally allow moisture into the optical system when the scope remains in proper condition.
The sealed construction also protects the internal components during normal outdoor use.
Always follow Leupold’s cleaning and care instructions instead of opening the scope body.
Lightweight Mark 5HD Design
The scope weighs approximately 26 ounces.
That keeps it relatively light considering its 35mm tube, first focal plane reticle, illumination system and 18x maximum magnification.
The compact body also prevents the scope from becoming unnecessarily bulky.
As a result, you get a broad adjustment system without adding excessive weight.
