Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18×44 PR2-MIL FDE Scope

The Leupold Mark 5HD PR2-MIL FDE combines the familiar 3.6-18×44 Mark 5HD platform with a first focal plane PR2-MIL reticle and a distinctive Dark Earth finish.

Leupold pairs the MIL-based reticle with its M5C3 ZeroLock adjustment system. Therefore, the reticle and turrets use the same measurement system, which keeps the controls straightforward.

The scope also uses a 35mm maintube, 44mm objective lens and precision side focus. In addition, the approximately 26 oz weight keeps the optic relatively light for its magnification and adjustment range.

This version does not use illumination, so there is no reticle battery or brightness control to manage.

Leupold Mark 5HD PR2-MIL FDE Magnification

The Leupold Mark 5HD PR2-MIL FDE provides magnification from 3.6x to 18x.

At 3.6x, the scope gives the user a wider view of the area around the target. Meanwhile, moving toward 18x brings smaller details closer.

The 5:1 zoom ratio gives the scope five times as much magnification at the upper end as at the lower end.

Field of view measures approximately 28.3 feet at 100 yards on 3.6x and 5.8 feet at 100 yards on 18x.

PR2-MIL First Focal Plane Reticle

The PR2-MIL reticle sits in the first focal plane.

Therefore, the reticle changes apparent size together with the target image as magnification changes.

Its MIL markings remain proportional throughout the 3.6-18x range. As a result, the relationship between the reticle and image stays consistent instead of depending on one particular magnification setting.

This gives the user a straightforward MIL-based reticle across the full zoom range.

PR2-MIL Reticle Layout

The PR2-MIL provides a detailed set of MIL-based references without relying on a basic crosshair alone.

Its layout gives the shooter visual references for elevation and horizontal corrections while keeping the measurement system consistent with the M5C3 turret.

In addition, the reticle offers a more structured layout than a basic duplex-style design.

For shooters who already use MIL measurements, the PR2-MIL keeps the system familiar without mixing units.

MIL Reticle and Turret System

Both the reticle and adjustment turrets use MIL.

Each adjustment click equals 0.1 MIL.

Therefore, ten clicks equal one complete MIL of adjustment.

This makes the measurement system easier to follow because there is no need to convert between MIL and MOA values.

M5C3 ZeroLock Elevation Turret

Leupold equips this Mark 5HD with the M5C3 elevation dial.

The turret moves in 0.1 MIL clicks and provides approximately 29 MIL of total elevation adjustment.

In addition, the elevation system works across three revolutions.

A visual and tactile revolution indicator helps the user keep track of the dial position.

Three-Revolution Elevation System

The M5C3 adjustment system works across three revolutions.

This allows the turret to provide a broad elevation range without making the dial unnecessarily large.

The revolution indicator also helps distinguish one turn from another.

Therefore, the user gets a clearer reference when moving through larger amounts of adjustment.

ZeroLock System

The ZeroLock system helps prevent unwanted movement of the elevation dial.

Once the turret sits at the desired position, the lock helps keep it there during ordinary handling.

As a result, accidental bumps are less likely to alter the setting.

The system remains mechanical and straightforward, so it does not depend on electronics.

ZeroStop Function

The elevation system also provides ZeroStop.

After the zero position has been established correctly, the dial reaches a firm stopping point when returning to that setting.

Therefore, the user gets a clear reference instead of continuing to turn the turret beyond zero.

ZeroLock and ZeroStop work together to make the elevation controls easier to manage.

29 MIL Elevation Adjustment

The scope provides approximately 29 MIL of total elevation travel.

Each click moves the adjustment by 0.1 MIL.

This broad range works together with the three-revolution M5C3 turret.

In addition, the MIL-based adjustment matches the PR2-MIL reticle, so the measurement system remains consistent throughout the optic.

Windage Adjustment

Windage also adjusts in 0.1 MIL clicks.

The scope provides approximately 23 MIL of total windage adjustment.

Unlike the exposed elevation dial, the windage control uses a cap.

Therefore, the cap helps protect the windage setting from unwanted movement during normal use and storage.

Leupold Mark 5HD PR2-MIL FDE 35mm Tube

The Leupold Mark 5HD PR2-MIL FDE uses a 35mm maintube.

Therefore, the scope requires rings or a one-piece mount made specifically for a 35mm tube.

Standard 30mm and 1-inch scope rings will not fit correctly.

The larger tube also gives the internal adjustment system room for its broad elevation and windage ranges.

44mm Objective Lens

The Mark 5HD uses a 44mm objective lens.

This size keeps the front of the optic relatively compact while working well with the 3.6-18x magnification range.

In addition, it avoids some of the extra bulk that comes with larger 50mm or 56mm objective lenses.

The 44mm objective helps the overall scope maintain a balanced size.

Dark Earth FDE Finish

One of the main differences with this model is the Dark Earth finish, commonly called FDE.

The finish gives the optic a different appearance from the standard black PR2-MIL version.

However, the core optical and adjustment features remain centered on the same Mark 5HD 3.6-18×44 platform.

Therefore, the FDE version makes sense for users who specifically want the Dark Earth color while keeping the PR2-MIL reticle and M5C3 controls.

FDE Mark 5HD Appearance

The Dark Earth finish covers the scope body and gives this model its distinctive appearance.

It works particularly well when the rest of the equipment uses similar earth-tone colors.

However, color does not change the 35mm tube size, magnification range or mounting requirements.

Therefore, choose the model based on both the reticle system and the finish you want.

Precision Side Focus

The scope includes a side-focus adjustment.

Parallax adjustment begins at approximately 50 yards.

Therefore, the user can adjust the optical system for different viewing distances without turning the front objective.

The control sits on the side of the scope, which also keeps it within easy reach.

Parallax Adjustment

Correct side-focus adjustment helps keep the target image and reticle visually stable when eye position changes slightly.

Therefore, the control can improve the sight picture at different viewing distances.

The important point is to adjust the side focus according to the actual distance instead of leaving it at one setting all the time.

The listed minimum parallax setting begins around 50 yards.

Eye Relief

Eye relief measures approximately 3.5 to 3.8 inches through the magnification range.

This gives some flexibility when positioning the scope.

However, final placement depends on the rifle, stock, mount and the user’s natural head position.

Check the full sight picture at both lower and higher magnification before finalizing the mounting position.

Field of View

At 3.6x, the scope provides approximately 28.3 feet of field of view at 100 yards.

At 18x, the field of view narrows to approximately 5.8 feet at 100 yards.

This change is normal because increasing magnification shows a smaller part of the surrounding scene.

Therefore, lower magnification gives a wider view while higher magnification brings smaller details closer.

Non-Illuminated PR2-MIL Reticle

This version does not use reticle illumination.

Therefore, it does not require a battery.

There is also no brightness dial or illumination control.

For users who prefer an etched MIL reticle without electronic components, this keeps the setup simple.

No Battery Required

Because the PR2-MIL reticle is non-illuminated, the scope operates without a reticle battery.

The etched reticle remains present regardless of battery availability.

Therefore, users do not have to check or replace a battery for normal reticle visibility under suitable light conditions.

This also separates this model from illuminated Mark 5HD configurations.

Lightweight Mark 5HD Design

The scope weighs approximately 26 ounces.

That keeps it relatively light considering the 35mm tube, first focal plane reticle, 18x maximum magnification and broad adjustment range.

Leupold also describes the Mark 5HD 3.6-18×44 platform as being considerably lighter than many scopes in the same general class.

As a result, the optic provides a substantial feature set without becoming unnecessarily heavy.

Leupold Optical System

Leupold builds the Mark 5HD optical system around useful light transmission, image clarity and glare control.

In simple terms, the optical system aims to maintain a clear image as outdoor lighting changes.

The 44mm objective and 5:1 magnification range also help provide a practical balance between size and viewing flexibility.

Rather than using exaggerated wording, the important point is that the scope combines a useful magnification range with a clear first focal plane reticle.

Waterproof and Fogproof Construction

Leupold seals the Mark 5HD to help keep moisture away from the internal optical components.

Therefore, changing weather and temperatures should not normally cause internal fogging when the optic remains in proper condition.

The construction also helps protect the scope during ordinary outdoor use.

Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions when cleaning the lenses and exterior.
